I've been doing a bit of work on my doom sg

Not posted about this yet, but i’ve been making an sg inspired guitar with a scale length of 28.5″ for extra doom, gonna tune it a# – a# because i’m really a bassist who’s shit at guitar.

    specs are;

    neckthrough

maple centre (neck and middle of body)

    mahogany wings

    flame maple top

    28.5″ scale length

    80s super dimarzio pick ups

vol/vol and probably the switch on one of the knobs

other marketing bullshit people normally put.

Anyway, it’s almost done now, just needs strings so i can file the nut out and give it a final set up then i’ll just give it a final polish up and stick the electronics in it.

    Servicing a Carlsbro

Did this one a bit ago but I thought I’d post up some pictures.

Basically picked up a Carlsbro pa60r that needed a bit of attention. Servicing it was a bit of a ball ache since I picked up a whole batch of capacitors that were labeled wrong and gave me hours of trouble shooting fun!

Other than that the drive balance was really off ( even more so than your average Marshall) so had to replace the balance resistors. Works great now and does what it should and even one of the hunts caps in it wasn’t knackered!

Tags: vampower valve mullard shit valves

    Follow up on the vampower

Been having a bit more fun with this today. The bias for the screen grids is perfectly settled with and with valves in it yet valves are still Losing bias and red plating!

This would indicate either the valves were shit or that there isn’t enough current in the bias supply. I’ve switched out the set for a pair of good mullards and the bias supply comes off the ht which supplies more than enough current! Fun times.

Anyway these are the original valves can you tell which one is ducked?

New to this – here’s what’s on my bench

Got a vampower amp a while ago which had the loudest 60 cycle hum known to man.

These amps are pretty rare and we’re only really used by mark bolan of t rex fame.

Currently I am attempting to get this amp up and running again. I did all the basic maintenance of replacing duff caps and resistors and I’ve pin pointed the problem to the bias section (the bit that controls the grid voltage and stops Amps catching fire) and I’ve stopped it humming but I’ve still got run away grid currents. Thinking the culprit is these cheap Shite bias caps I got from America.

Anyway here are pictures and gut shots

I wonder if they could have managed to design in longer leads from the PSU side to the caps (aesthetically?) balancing out the other end? Looks like fun.

Ha i’m sure they could’ve if they tried. While vampower were way ahead of their time in some thing’s they never seemed to execute it all to well.

including the circuit mounted preamp sockets-which just bend when you put a valve in!
